I have played sax since 1980 and I never liked the 'taste' of cane reeds. They made me cringe and get goose bumps, hairs on the back of the neck, every time I put one in my mouth. I can't explain why. I also have always played with a double embouchure because I can't stand the buzzing in my upper teeth. I have played RICO synthetics since sometime in the early 80s and I've never looked back. I used them in marching band, concert band and jazz band. I recently purchased a Legere 2.75 and I am convinced it is better than my RICOs. It has become my preferred reed with the RICO as my backups. It's pretty expensive but it lasts so damn long so if you take care of stuff. I think the price is worth the risk.

Coming back to sax after a 30 year break. After 4 years of high school with daily marching band, concert band, jazz band and nightly practice, I shoved the horn in storage for a very very long time. Now that I'm back I'm enjoying your humor and way of teaching this old dog new tricks. You have gained a new sub. Thanks for the quality videos!

Dr. Wally, I am a true beginner, (never ever picked a sax up). Age 58 and just retired. Have Always wanted to learn the sax and now I have the time. What is the best way to start learning. I watch videos and don’t have a clue of what they are talking about. I have been practicing going on my 2nd week. I have been working on the basic 7 notes and finger placement, long tones from those 7 and tongue articulation. When I hear major, minor, flat, sharp, I don’t have a clue as to what they are saying. What direction would you suggest I go in. My goal is to be playing in front of people, (church) in a years time from now. Thank you for any help you can give. Stan

Fantastic video as always, thanks for the good stuff you share. I have a question, actually: it's much likely down to "too much tension/force" but still, when playing Eb i tend to almost move the entire sax to the right, since there are no side keys involved to "counteract" the motion of the 2 palm keys. D is quite easy but with Eb i always feel i'm fighting to keep my instrument straight in position in front of me. Is this common and is there something specific i can look after to improve? It's on tenor, by the way. Thank you very much!

Watching this video in 2024, I was initially disappointed when the link led me to the product listing...and everything was out of stock! After a few extra clicks around the WCW site, though, I discovered that the company has done the unthinkable: they released - for FREE - the .stl files for all of the 64 and 72 mouthpieces. For FREE! That means those of us with 3D printers and a little patience can still get these great mouthpieces. I've printed and played the alto and tenor 64's and they both outplayed my previous daily drivers (Meyer 5 and Jody Jazz HR*, respectively). Thanks to you, Dr. Wally, and to Windy City Woodwinds for these great pieces...my bari model is printing as I type. 😁

The perfect hour to practice for me was the hour immediately after my lesson. I’d go from my teachers studio to a practice room for an hour. When I could do that, I made more progress on the saxophone than any other time period. In contrast, the 30 minutes I spent practicing just BEFORE my piano lesson…well, I’ll never be known as a piano player. 😢

Which Glenn Gould Goldberg? He did a famous (and somewhat strange or perhaps one might say idiosyncratic) recording in the 50's and then another in the 80's). What are you thinking is particularly relevant to sax musicality? I do certainly see how those amazing little piecelets should be in the background of every musician (and music amateur) who include in their panoply of traditions all genres influenced by post-medieval Western music... even more so than the Preludes & Fugues.

I play the new Selmer reeds No. 3 on the Selmer Concept mouthpiece both on alto and tenor, this setup works really well together for me. What I really don't like is the flow pack system Selmer more or less copied from Vandoren - just a lot of plastic that is not really necessary. I remember buying Rico/LaVoz as a kid in a cardboard box with paper padding inside - this worked just as well as all the plastic.

The Meyer wins in my opinion. I am hooked on Jackie Mclean's sound so you know where I'm coming from. I try to imitate his sound but difficult for me to get the darkness out of my horn. The Meyer you played had way more character to it than the other piece. I find your sound rich and full and I could pick you out of any other player including Desmond. I am curious as to how you would sound with a high baffled mouthpiece.

Thanks for the review. I'm having similar set up problems with a new Supreme tenor. Thankfully my dealer is giving great after sales support. But I agree. At the price paid I expected more. I've had an SA series 2 tenor for many years which is really great - but it requires lots of work & love to keep it that way.
